Designed back in the 1970s, the Steadicam was a game changer for fluid, cinematic movement. And it’s remained an industry standard for over five decades.

But we’ve found a way to take it a step further.

For the past eight years, our team has paired the Steadicam with a Segway Ninebot self-balancing scooter. It might sound unconventional, but in practice, it’s one of the most effective tools we’ve used to capture dynamic campus footage.

It takes a bit of initial practice, but once mastered, it’s second nature. The operator wears the Steadicam vest and manages the articulating arm and camera, while using the Segway to maintain consistent and/or variable speed and direction over longer distances. At the same time, a second team member remotely pulls focus using a wireless follow focus system, allowing for precise adjustments as subjects move through the frame.

The result is movement that feels effortless, with long, continuous shots that carry energy without distraction. Whether we’re weaving through a hallway between classes, tracking alongside a team at practice, or moving through an outdoor campus space, the camera stays smooth, stable, and immersed in the moment.

It’s a simple combination of two highly innovative tools, and when used well, it elevates everything around it.
